Rohan John Selected National Merit Scholarship Winner

Redwood Christian High School is pleased to announce that Rohan John has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship Winner, one of 2500 winners selected from 16,000 Finalists out of more than 1.5 million juniors in 2019-20 that took the PSAT/NMSQT Exam.

Rohan is a senior at RCS, with an overall 4.3 Grade Point Average (weighted) and 4.0 (unweighted), and has always been ready for any academic challenge. This year he is taking a rigorous course load, which includes such challenging classes as AP English Literature and Composition, AP Chemistry, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, Physics, Apologetics, Speech, and Government, while taking classes on his own and passing the AP Calculus BC exam and the AP Music Theory exam.  He has also achieved CSF Life Membership status and will be a Sealbearer at graduation.  He has attended Redwood Christian Schools since kindergarten.

Rohan will be attending University of C San Diego and studying Bioengineering with a specialization in Biosystems.  In addition to the National Merit Scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, he  received the Regents’ Scholarship from UCSD.  He plans to go to medical school with hopes to do medical missions overseas in the future.

In the summer of 2019, he participated in a research project at Highland Hospital in Oakland that investigated cost-effective breast cancer treatment for underprivileged women, from which a paper he wrote has recently been published in the Journal of Global Oncology.   In the summer of 2020, Rohan served as an intern at Vivio Health, a company looking to decrease spending on specialty drugs.   He plans to do more research once he’s in college, as UC San Diego is a hub for medical research.

In addition to being an outstanding student, Rohan is also a gifted musician recognized by “At the Music in the Parks” competition with the RCHS Concert Choir, received the Best Accompanist award both years.  He also received a Superior (perfect score) at the Association of Christian Schools International Festival this year, and accompanied the Jenny Lin Foundation Concert Choir for two years.  He also has a heart for service including serving at the Castro Valley Rotary’s Children’s Christmas Party making balloon animals for children living in domestic violence and homeless shelters, and attends 3Crosses Church in Castro Valley, where he has volunteered in the Children’s Ministry as a keyboardist since the sixth grade.  He also served on the class council as President in grades 9, 10, and 12 and Vice President in grade 11.   The summer before his freshman and junior years, he served on mission trips to Mexico where he assisting in building homes, operated Day Care facilities and Sunday schools, served at soup kitchens, and handed out food and water.

Rohan’s parents are Pramod and Grace John of Castro Valley.  Rohan’s brother AJ graduated from Redwood Christian High School in 2016 (UC Davis, 2020 Bachelors in Criminology) and his sister, Hannah, is a member of the Class of 2023.

Dr. Al Hearne, Superintendent of Redwood Christian Schools, stated “Rohan is a gifted student and musician in addition to being a charismatic leader and outstanding young man.  He is committed to serving Jesus in everything he does and will excel at whatever he is led to study.”
