Mr. Hearne’s Recommended Resources:
Today’s parents are the first generation of parents in the age of smart phones, Internet, and cameras in a child’s pocket. Being the first, they don’t have the benefit previous generations had who walked this same path; they are having to forge the path. Different parents are making different decisions regarding what is OK and what is not OK for their children. In doing so, they are parenting their children. I am becoming increasingly convinced that the home, the church, and the school all need to do a much more thorough job of training our kids regarding Internet safety and the responsibility of using the Internet. Therefore, today’s first recommended resource is, “Digital Citizenship – Nothing Is Private.” This chapter explains how a “privacy setting” doesn’t mean that whatever is posted is actually private. All anyone in the “trusted circle” has to do is a screen-capture shot and the “private” item can now become public for all to see. There are several discussion points at the end of the chapter that can be used to help children understand the magnitude of posting something online. The second recommended resource is a link
from the first, “What Does Friend Mean Now?” The author chronicles how the word “friend” has changed over the years. As always, the third resource is the Axis Cultural Translator to keep you updated with the most important ideas and concepts taking shape in our society.
