High School Missions Trip in San Francisco and Oakland

San Francisco private school

From June 10-13 Redwood Christian High School partnered with the Center for Student Missions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our group was made up of 11 students and 4 adults. The trip was 4 days and 3 nights. We stayed in downtown Oakland at the First Presbyterian Church. The ministry opportunities available to us were:

Bay Area Christian high school3 hours at the San Francisco Food Bank. We packaged 18,000 lbs. of food!

We took patients from the Laguna Honda Hospital to the SF Zoo for an afternoon

We tutored young students at the SF Village Project summer program for a day

City Search: This was 4 hours in the Civic Center area and in SOMA District. We were each given two dollars to buy lunch for ourselves and we were challenged to also find a way to help feed the homeless with that two dollars. We spent time engaging the homeless in conversation, praying for needs, and just sharing God’s love with them. This was an amazing opportunity to not walk by the homeless, but rather to spend time with them.

Urban Plunge: This was 90 minutes in Mission District and Civic Center area. Essentially it was a scavenger hunt that required the 4 teams to interact with the people in these districts, observe what life is like there, identify the different nationalities represented, the different music styles, different smells, different religions, different styles of food, and also a challenge to identify and meet a need for someone who lives in that district with only $5.

An evening Prayer Tour through Oakland

Two of our students led worship one evening for the three church/school groups that were staying at the church with us.

This trip was challenging for both the students and the staff as we were stretched out of our comfort zones and given the opportunity to interact with people we might typically pass by and not even notice. It changed our outlook on the homeless in San Francisco and Oakland. It also opened our eyes to the myriad of ministries established in the Bay Area and to the needs these ministries have that we can help meet. What a fantastic way to kick off summer vacation!!
