Mr. Hearne’s Recommended Resources:
Parenting is an important calling!!! I was reminded of this as I prepared to write today’s devotional thought on Psalm 78:4. We are called by God to raise our children in such a way as to understand His glorious deeds. One glorious deed often overlooked in that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) and our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Therefore, it’s extremely important for parents to have courageous conversations with their children about all areas of life, especially with influences that come from the media. I have become increasingly concerned in the last year or so about the nationwide rise amongst teenagers who are joking about self-harm and suicide. Part of this discussion has been fueled by TV shows such as “13 Reasons Why.” When the show first came out, there was a huge push to educate parents about the dangers of this Netflix series. Now that this has died down, I want to bring it back to your attention, for two reasons. First, parents need to have courageous conversations with their children as to why self-harm is always wrong, especially because it is not honoring to the temple of the Holy Spirit. Second, parents must be the most important influence in their children’s lives and this show portrays parents in a very negative light. To help you with this conversation, I am first going to direct you to an excellent “Parent’s Guide to 13 Reasons Why,” written by Focus on the Family. Many of the problems that our kids face today start in their digital world, a world in which adults often do not learn about the problems until it’s too late. Therefore, my second recommended resource is “How to Teach Kids Cell Phone Safety” from Safe Smart Social. As always, the third recommended resource is the “Axis Cultural Translator” to keep you up to date regarding what’s happening in our culture.
