Senior, Jalina Archuleta, interacts with one of the children.

Last night, the Varsity Girls Basketball team and RCS Interact Club served from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm at the Castro Valley Adult Center for a Christmas Party hosted by the Castro Valley Rotary Club.  It’s no secret that RCS students are responsible, respectful, and they love to serve!

Senior, Meghan Geer, uses her artistic talents to offer a face painting station for the children.

Families who came are currently staying at local homeless or battered shelters.  Our students welcomed the children and helped them feel safe and loved.  Children could participate in a variety of activities such as face painting, balloon animals, coloring books, and a bean bag toss.  Perhaps the greatest surprise of the evening was when Santa himself arrived riding on the top of a fire truck!  Students also served as Santa’s helpers passing out gifts to children and their families (that were previously collected by the CHP and wrapped at the MSHS campus).

Superintendent Hearne with his sons Oscar and Steven attended the CV Rotary Christmas Party.

In addition to the student and student-athlete volunteers, RCS administrators and bus driver also served.  Mr. Bibby drove the RCS school bus to offer transportation for families to attend the event.  Miss McGrath, Mr. Barnhart, Mr. Hearne, and Mr. Kady also served in a variety of ways at the event.  Superintendent Emeritus Johnson and Mrs. Johnson also made an appearance.

Miss McGrath reflects on the outstanding service of our high school students, as she has attended the CV Rotary Christmas party for several years: “Some years, the children who come are really timid.  But this year, our volunteers were so welcoming and made the kids feel safe to have fun.  Everyone appeared to be having a great time.”
