Mr. Hearne’s Recommended Resources:
Did you know that God has given all parents a homework assignment? In “Deuteronomy 6:4-9,” God provides the first set of instructions to parents, regarding expectations on how to raise children. As we all know, our parenting homework assignment isn’t ever really
complete. There is also the next part of the project. I was reminded of this when a headline caught my eye yesterday, “Teen Suicide up 70+ Percent Over a Decade.” What can we as parents do to help ensure that such a tragedy does not strike our family? It’s extremely
important for parents to have courageous conversations with their children about all areas of life, including the value of one’s own life. We must be teaching our children that they are made in the image of God (“Genesis 1:26-27”). My first recommended resource is a handout “Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program – Talking with Your Teen/Youth” from “Yellow Ribbon”. The mission of Yellow Ribbon is “preventing suicide attempts by making suicide prevention accessible to everyone and removing barriers to help.” Their
handout is designed to help parents have courageous conversations with their children as to why self-harm is always wrong, and I would add especially because it is not honoring to the temple of the Holy Spirit (“1 Corinthians 6:19-20”). Second, it may be helpful to have real life stories that do not go into many details about suicide when having this courageous conversation, and to illustrate how to choose life instead of suicide. Therefore, my second recommended resource is from Focus on the Family, “When You Feel Hopeless.” This article explains four stories of tragedy and then explains how only God can save and provide us with hope. As always, the third recommended resource is the “Axis Cultural Translator” to keep you up to date regarding what’s happening in our culture.
