Explore RCS Essay and Science Fair Winners Recap
Submitted by Teresa Hendren in RCS Highlights on January 29, 2020
Explore RCS is a school-wide’ academic demonstration night and open house. All grades, TK – 12th, were represented at the event. In addition to demonstrations and exhibits showcasing student learning, there were two competitions: an essay contest and a middle school science fair.
The Essay Contest was carried out in the weeks leading up to Explore for grades three through twelfth. There were three levels: Elementary (3rd – 5th grades), Middle School (6 – 8th grades), and High School (9th – 12th grades). Elementary students wrote a narrative story given the prompt, “Write a short story about the person in your life who has helped you the most.” Middle School students wrote an informative essay given the prompt, “How does your family encourage you in hard times?” High School students wrote an opinion essay given the prompt, “Write a persuasive essay about where your inspiration for your future goals has come from and why it is important to you.” Submissions were scored per a rubric by RCS administrators.
In addition, a Middle School Science Fair was held in the Gymnasium. Seventh and eight grade students carried out the scientific process to prove/disprove a hypothesis of their choosing. A judging team consisting of RCHS Science teachers and anonymous volunteers scored each entry on Monday evening via a rubric to evaluate each group’s scientific method.
