The Eagles hosted the 43rd Annual Redwood Christian Basketball Classic tournament last Tuesday, 11/28, through Friday, 12/1. The tournament was held at 3Crosses Gymnasium in Castro Valley. Eight teams competed in this tournament, from as far as five hours away (Fortuna, CA): Redwood Christian, College Prep, Oakland Military Institute, Gateway (SF), International (SF), Fortuna, Marin Academy (San Rafael), and St. Thomas More (San Jose).
In the championship game, the Eagles played against the Marin Academy Wildcats. The Eagles came out strong with an early lead, hitting four three-point shots in a row. At the end of the first half, three players (Josh Gella, Adam Phillips, and Alex Williams) had already scored in double digits. The team continued their consistent offensive ball movement and hit key shots to hold their lead throughout the game by as much as 20 points. The final score was RCHS 68, MAHS 48.
Despite the extraordinary performance in the tournament, Head Coach Drew Sanchez says there is still room to improve and that this is just the first of many goals the team has this season. The second goal is to have a winning percentage in league. The third goal is to get to and win the NCS championship. The fourth goal is to get to state (California Interscholastic Federation, Division V). “So,” he said, “we’re just taking it one goal at a time.” Coach Sanchez told his team, “We won, but I am ready to go play again because I know we can still get better.” The team and coaches are looking forward to an exciting and competitive season, and Coach Sanchez gives us some specific areas of improvement to watch for. “Our strength is in the full court and we were able to play to our strength this week. We can still improve on execution in the half court and trusting each other overall.”
The 2nd Place trophy was accepted by the Marin Academy team captains, Sam Kinney and Sam Faber. The 1st Place trophy was accepted by Redwood captains Adam Phillips and Alex Williams.
