Peace and Confidence: Bay Area Private School Graduate Reflects on Time at RCS

Dr. Hearne recently interviewed RCS Alumni, Adrianna (Martinez) Johnson, class of 2009.  As part of the interview, Adrianna was asked to share her thoughts on this month’s theme verse, Deuteronomy 6:5-7: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

Adrianna: When you fully commit to loving the Lord with your entire being there is such a peace and reassurance.  Even when you’re facing trials and hard times there is an understanding that the Lord is using this for His will and you are just at ease.  Also, when you make it the foundation in your marriage and your home it is comforting to know that your life is filled with not only Jesus but also the Holy Spirit.  I know that for me, I am personally able to handle difficult situations differently. I aspire to do things the way Jesus did and called us to do. My goal every day is to be more like Jesus — not only through my words but also by my actions and by loving the Lord with my entire heart.

When did you begin attending Redwood Christian Schools and what year did you graduate?

I began in 7th grade and I graduated from Redwood Christian High School in 2009.

Who was your favorite RCS Teacher?

Mr. Hearne! And Mr. Warner! Yes, they were once teachers and they were even the fun teachers!

What activities did you participate in while a student?

I played multiple sports, but softball was my primary sport. I also participated in student government, the Spirit Ministry Team, and the Missions Team.

As a student what did you love about RCS?

I really loved that they always embraced who I was as a person and let me grow and learn from my mistakes and guided me and my big personality. They always allowed room for growth and learning experiences that I still apply to my adult life. Teachers like Mr. Hearne (including his awesome wife Megan) were truly invested in me, and even 10 years after graduating, they are still involved in my family’s life.  They genuinely care and the investment you receive at RCHS is priceless.

What did you do after graduating from RCS?

After I graduated, I attended Azusa Pacific University where I was a walk-on for the softball team.  I eventually earned a scholarship and finished my degree with a Major in Physical Education and a Minor in Coaching.  After I graduated in 2013, I was a graduate assistant softball coach while I completed my masters in Organizational Leadership at APU.  I was then hired as Assistant Coach for the APU softball team and I also taught Physical Education at the University. In between all that, I met the love of my life (Matthew Johnson) in 2013, and we were married in 2014.  Fast forward a few years and we moved back to the Bay Area. We have since added to our family. We have a 19-month-old daughter, Reagan Jayne, and we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our next daughter, Haley Glessie, who will be arriving in September.

What are you currently doing?

I am currently a realtor in San Leandro, working for my family’s Real Estate and Construction company (Varos Real Estate & Construction) and enjoying being a wife and a mom!
