2015-16 will be our 46th year of ministry! I hope you will be able to be a part of the many activities scheduled throughout the school year. Please take note of the Important Dates for 2015-16 for planning family outings and other activities. Important change: as previously announced, the first day of school will be Monday, August 17, 2015. Graduation week for the 2015-16 school year will be the week of May 23, 2016 and the Class of 2016 High School Graduation will be on Thursday, May 26, 2016. Please Note: The current printed school calendar date for the first day of school in August 2015 is incorrect. The first day of school is Monday, August 17, 2015.
It is hard to believe that this is the final Parent News Bulletin of the 2014-15 school year! Please be sure to read it thoroughly and keep it in a safe place for use throughout the summer. You may also visit our school Website at www.rcs.edu for school information and calendar updates. The school Website is a GREAT way to share RCS with your friends as we have lots of pictures of the kids plus highlights and general information about RCS-Grandparents Day, Royal Choir, athletic teams, awards programs, and more.
Once again, the 2014-15 school year has been a tremendous blessing to the entire RCS Community. It is critical to remember that by having your children at Redwood Christian Schools they are being taught, without apology or compromise, the Truth in God’s Word regarding the sanctity of life and marriage, as well as creation and the Ten Commandments. These (and others) bedrock keystones of the Christian Faith are consistently taught and modeled throughout our school community, and have been for the first 45 years of the ministry of Redwood Christian Schools.
As a cost-saving effort, all campus offices are closed every Friday in July. There is a mail drop in the District Office door for your convenience.
Importance of Email at RCS
Having a current email account is important for receiving news, school information and critical updates from RCS. I also recommend that parents regularly visit our website at www.rcs.edu as well as join the RCS Facebook community. If you do not have an email account, I recommend establishing one. Please let us know of any updates to your email address so that we can be sure to update our information. Thank you.
Some classes are nearing a waiting list. If you have not re-enrolled, please don’t put this off any longer. We are planning some exciting additions and need your response to plan productively.
Graduations are GREAT events at RCS!
The week of June 1 will be full with kindergarten graduation (June 1), fifth grade graduation (June 3), middle school graduation (June 4) and the senior high graduation (June 5).

Well here we are – The last few weeks of the 2014-15 school year! This first year as the RCE Principal has been rewarding, challenging, fun, exciting, and such a blessing to be a part of your children’s lives each day. Thank you for entrusting your children to us.
As we move into the summer, there are so many inexpensive ways families are able to spend time together. Below is a fun list of ideas of things to do during your child’s summer vacation. Take advantage of this precious time to be with your child and be sure to take lots of pictures. Time is important and goes by so quickly. So make the most of your time together, whether it is joining in on a fun activity, or spending quiet time with your child.
Also, remember to take time each day to be thankful for all of the wonderful opportunities our God provides to us and the moments He gives us with family and friends. These are special times. A time to make memories to cherish forever.

Spiritual Emphasis Week
Spiritual Emphasis Week was held during the week of March 23-26. Our guest speaker was Mr. Paul Bagai, Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Hayward. Pulling from the Fruits of the Spirit, Pastor Paul’s focus was on Kindness. He gave several Biblical examples like Jesus healing the leper and the blind man. He also orchestrated a student’s-only drama of the Good Samaritan. Pastor Paul challenged the students to find different ways to be kind not only to friends and family, but to those we see in our everyday life.
Family Life for 4th and 5th Grade Girls
Thursday, May 21
All fourth and fifth grade girls and their mothers are invited to our annual Family Life presentation at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 in Room N15 on the North Campus. The one-hour presentation by Mrs. Boyd (RCE Assistant Principal) and Mrs. Neal (one of our 4th-grade teachers) will be both informative and practical. Parents, please note: you may choose to attend when your daughters are in either fourth or fifth grade.
Family Day at Great America – Tuesday, June 2
Come celebrate the completion of a great school year by playing at Great America on Tuesday, June 2. The last day to purchase your discounted tickets through the campus office is May 7th. Mark your calendar now for Tuesday, June 2. Fliers have been sent home with the students. Any questions, please call the Elementary Office at (510) 537-4288.
Graduations and Awards – June 1st and 3rd
Academic Assistance Program Kindergarten Students Only
Year-end awards will be given to our Kindergarten Academic Assistance Program students in the classroom at 11:00 a.m. on June 1. Parents of our Academic Assistance Program Kindergarten students may take their student home after the ceremony.
Our Academic Program Kindergarten students will be graduating on Monday, June 1, in the Worship Center. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. Students should report to their classroom by 6:45 p.m. Kindergartners will close out the school year with a half-day of school on Monday morning and then go home to rest and prepare for the big event that evening. THERE IS NO AFTERNOON Extended-Day Care FOR THAT HALF DAY.
1st – 4th grade
Annual awards for all students in the Academic and Academic Assistance Programs in grades 1 through 4 will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, in the Worship Center. Students in grades 1 through 4 should report to their classrooms by 8:45 a.m. School will be out for the summer at the conclusion of the awards ceremony. Extended-Day Care will begin at noon for any remaining students.
Our fifth graders from the Academic and Academic Assistance Programs will receive year-end awards and graduate in the Worship Center on Wednesday, June 3, beginning at 11:10 a.m. Students should dress up (use moderation, please) for their graduation: dress shirts, slacks, ties and dress shoes for the boys would be appropriate, while girls should wear dresses with sleeves within dress code regulations. Girls should also wear low heel dress shoes as they will be climbing and standing on risers. School will be over at the conclusion of the ceremony. Watch for more information coming home soon.
As a reminder, students are not to be dropped off prior to 8:45 a.m. unless they are checked into Extended Day Care or being supervised by a parent. Students who are on campus before 8:45 a.m. without parental supervision will be checked in to EDC. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this to keep our students as safe as possible.
Please remember that students who are not regularly enrolled in Extended Day Care should be picked up at 3:30 p.m. Students will be supervised until 3:45 p.m. After 3:45 p.m., students who are remaining are then signed into our Extended-Day Care (EDC) program.

Extended Care Ministries
Below is the EDC Schedule for the last week of school. It is a busy one, so please make note of these dates on your calendar as needed:

This is a half-day for K and AAPK students. EDC is NOT available for K and AAPK students in the afternoon. All other grades may attend EDC from 7:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in their regular locations.

Our fourth year of iLearn@RCS has been a success and we are excited to begin the fifth year. We have learned a lot this year with new security software and restricting apps that can be downloaded and websites that students are able to reach. This summer will be spent implementing several tweaks to the program so that the faculty (and parents) have additional options available for helping manage a student’s digital choices.
We will have three iPad Orientation sessions before school begins: 9am on August 13, 10am on August 13, and 9:30am on August 14. If both the student and a parent attend one of the iPad orientation sessions, after filling out the required paperwork the student can check out his/her iPad for the year. The fourth iPad orientation session will take place on August 17, for all students who did not attend one of the first three sessions. They will bring the paperwork home for parents to sign and we will begin to checkout iPads to these students on August 18.
As with all curricular programs at RCS, learning goals have been created in order to guide the instructional aspect of iLearn@RCS. These learning goals identify several higher-order thinking skills and identify digital citizenship as critical for students to learn effectively for a lifetime and live productively in the 21st century.
The iLearn@RCS learning goals for students are:
- Students will be able to apply the truth of God’s Word in their daily lives through utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will be able to demonstrate creativity and innovation while utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will engage in communication and collaboration while utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will be able to conduct research and display information fluency while utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making while utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will be able to model appropriate digital citizenship utilizing 21st century skills.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations utilizing 21st century skills.

RCS Has Three Winning Essays in Stossel Essay Contest
Stossel in the Classroom announced the winners of its fifth annual student essay contest.
Redwood Christian High School Seniors Elise Olson, John Luke Saake and Jordan Huemoeller were all selected as Semi-Finalists.
Students aged 12 to 18 were asked to write an essay taking a critical look at any government regulation and building their case for whether the regulation is good or bad, after viewing John Stossel’s TV special addressing the issue.
There were nearly 3,500 essays submitted by students across the U.S. and Canada, with 125 essays chosen as prize winners.
Lost and Found
All items in our Lost and Found will be given away after Friday, June 5. Encourage your students to check for any items that may belong to them. We have quite a collection!
Fourth Quarter Report Cards
Report cards will be distributed by homeroom teachers and advisors following the awards assembly on June 4 for MS students and June 5 for HS students. If a student is going to be absent, please clear it with the office and arrange for the report card to be picked up or mailed. A self-addressed, stamped envelope is required if you would like the report card mailed. Tuition, bus fees, fines for damaged or lost books, iPad fees, and overdue library books MUST BE PAID BEFORE REPORT CARDS WILL BE ISSUED.
Summer Reading Program
Summer Break is just around the corner. In an effort to give students more options to choose material that is of specific interest, each grade level will have several selections from which students will be allowed to choose. AP and Honors courses will still require certain selections.
During the summer months students need to read their chosen selection(s) and upon returning to school in August be prepared to write an essay from a prompt specifically designed for the grade level. This first assignment will be used to assess not only knowledge of the chosen selection(s), but also the student’s ability to organize his or her thoughts according to a prompt that addresses specific literary elements. This essay will serve as the benchmark work for the year.
If a student chooses to enroll in an AP English course (AP Language or AP Literature) and does not complete the summer reading assignments specifically listed for the AP course, the student will be transferred to the general English course.
The book selections may be checked out of a local library, downloaded to a digital device, or purchased from a bookstore. It will be necessary to have the chosen selection(s) in class for the first two weeks of school.

The Middle School Awards Assembly will be held on Thursday, June 4, at 9:00am and the High School Awards Assembly will be held on Friday, June 5, at 9:00am. Both assemblies take place in the MSHS multipurpose room. Special awards will be given to students including subject awards, scholastic awards, student officer recognition, and ACSI student awards. All parents and friends are invited. Parents of students receiving awards will be notified. ALL students are expected to be present and in school dress code.
Parents of 8th Graders
The Eighth Grade Banquet is on Friday, May 29. The last day of classes is Thursday, May 28. The Awards Assembly is Thursday, June 4, 9:00am, in the MPR at the MSHS.
Following the Awards Assembly on Thursday, June 4, all eighth graders will be bused to Redwood Chapel for graduation practice. They must be picked up at Redwood Chapel at 12:00pm. Every eighth grader should be at the practice. Parents and guardians, please do not be late when picking up your child. The bus will not be returning to the MSHS.
The Redwood Christian Middle School traditional, academic Graduation is on June 4 at 7:00pm, in the Worship Center at Redwood Chapel Community Church, 19300 Redwood Road, Castro Valley. Graduates need to be in the Redwood Chapel gym by 6:30, dressed in “Game Day Dress” under their graduation gown. Please invite your relatives and friends to attend the graduation ceremony and share this joyous and important event in the lives of our young people. RCS practices a historical, academic graduation and asks that everyone in attendance, including the graduates, behave with the proper decorum.
Parents of Seniors
The Senior Chapel and Tea will be held on Friday, May 22, at 8:15am. This is a very special event which you won’t want to miss. We encourage you to make an extra effort to be here with your child. Many parents take their students to lunch afterward, as there are no classes for seniors that day.
High School Finals for Seniors
Grade 12 will be taking the following finals. Students need to be 100% in dress code in order to take their finals. Please check your child’s dress before they leave the house.

High School Graduation Rehearsal
At 11:00am on June 5, following the awards assembly, the graduation rehearsal will be held at Redwood Chapel. All seniors are expected to attend. The rehearsal should be finished by 12:30 p.m. Students are to arrive at Redwood Chapel no later than 11:00. Parents and Guardians please make sure that your child is at the graduation rehearsal.
Seniors who need transcripts sent to the college of their choice need to turn in a transcript request before leaving on the Senior Trip.
High School Graduation
The Senior Class of Redwood Christian High School announces its commencement exercises on Friday evening, June 5, at 7:00pm in the Worship Center at Redwood Chapel Community Church, 19300 Redwood Road, Castro Valley. Graduates need to be in the Gym at Redwood Chapel, already dressed in their graduation regalia by 6:40 p.m. RCS practices a traditional, academic graduation and asks that everyone in attendance, including the graduates, behave with the proper decorum.
From The Counselor
High School students are in the midst of finalizing their class selections for next year. We encourage discussion at home concerning appropriate class selections. Official class schedules will be mailed home during the third week of August. That will offer time for a final review of the schedule and an opportunity to adjust the schedule before school starts. Juniors should also register to take the SAT.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students take required classes. Eighth grade students may elect to take Algebra I rather than Algebra A, while seventh grade students have the option of taking general math or Singapore Math 7, but that is the only academic subject in which students have a choice. The results of the Algebra Diagnostic Test should be of some help in making this decision.
MSHS Parking Lot Instructions
Parents, thank you for BEING patient and courteous in the parking lot, which we know easily becomes congested. In order to help the traffic flow as smoothly as possible, we are asking you to please observe the following guidelines:
- DO NOT DRIVE IN THE EXIT
- ONLY DROP YOUR CHILD OFF IN THE DESIGNATED PICKUP/DROP OFF AREA
- be patient and courteous when dropping off and picking up your children
- make the full loop and do not cut through the student parking spaces
- keep moving forward in the pick-up lane (the right lane)
- do not cut through the cones
- do not pick up or drop off from the passing lane (the left lane) or the parent parking
- do not park in the student parking spaces, in the passing lane, or the pickup lane
- DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO WALK ACROSS THREE LANES OF TRAFFIC. Watch for the new “Do Not Cross” signs.

Middle School Awards Night
We will honor the middle school athletes who have participated on the Spring Season #2 sports teams (Girls Soccer and Boys Volleyball). Join us in the MSHS multipurpose room on Monday, May 11, at 7:00 p.m. The evening will include the presentation of individual awards, the year-end Inspirational Christian Athlete awards, and a potluck dessert. Please plan to attend this special event.
Senior High Awards Night
On Monday, May 18, at 7:00 p.m., we will honor the high school athletes who have participated in spring sports teams. The awards ceremony will be held in the MSHS multipurpose room. Special year-end awards (Inspirational Christian Athlete, Senior Athlete of the Year, etc.) will also be presented. The evening will conclude with a time of fellowship and refreshments.
Make plans to be a member of the Redwood Christian Athletics Booster Club for 2015-16. This active organization is concluding a tremendous year raising support for the athletic teams through various fundraising efforts culminated by the Crab Feed and Auction in February. The final meeting of the year was May 4th. The fundraising dollars allowed for the purchase of several sets of new uniforms and warm-ups for the RCS sports teams as well as equipment.
Now is the time to schedule your sports physical for the 2015-16 school year. Fall sports begin in August, and all athletes in grades 6-12 MUST have current physicals in order to try out. Members of Kaiser Permanente should schedule physicals immediately.
Summer Sports Camps
Call the Athletic Office at 510-317-8988 for more information and registration materials. Non RCS students are welcome to attend. Information was mailed home and an email was sent out.
Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Camp
Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Drew Sanchez will host the 26th Annual RCS Basketball Camp, to be held June 8-11 for ages 8-11 and June 15-18 for ages 12-15 at the Neighborhood Church Gym. Don’t miss these two weeks of fun, learning and competition. Boys and girls who are 8-15 are invited, including students from other schools.
This year’s 21st Annual RCS Baseball Camps will be held July 6-9 and July 13-16. Multiple sessions, offered each week, include pitching, hitting, and all skills. All sessions will be held at Redwood Christian MSHS under the direction of Varsity Head Baseball Coach Jim Cleveland. Students from outside schools are welcome. Sessions are available for ages 8-15.

What a fantastic Festival of Fine Arts the music and art students presented to us this year on Sunday, April 19th!
All of our choral and instrumental groups from the elementary through high school led us in song with a variety of inspirational, God glorifying songs, as well as, patriotic salutes to our flag, nation, and military personnel.
We were blessed as we viewed the art work of our students displayed in the foyer of the church as everyone entered the sanctuary. The highlight was at the end of the program when all of our choirs came together to sing “A Salute to the Armed Forces.” The audience watched as veterans of the various branches of the armed forces came forward to the front as their song was sung! Thank you singers for singing so strongly to show your support to these brave men and women who served our country!!
What a great festival season the choirs of Redwood Christian Schools has had! On March 5-6 the high school Concert Choir went to “Musicale” (High School Choral Festival) at Capital Christian Center in Sacramento, where we joined with 16 other choirs. This was a fantastic event. Our choir did outstanding and was well received by all at the festival. The choir performed two pieces for adjudication: “Kyrie Eleison” and “Ain’t-a That Good News,” as well as singing six other pieces with the mass choir in a performance on Friday evening.
The Vocal Ensemble DayBreak, as well as a mixed trio (Aliah Anderson, Klee and Matt Geronimo) and two soloists: Christopher Leung and Britta Sandine, also sang for adjudication and did great!
Ending the festival season, our middle school New Horizon Choir joined five other choirs at the ACSI Choral Festival in Roseville on Friday, April 24. Our choir sang two pieces both for adjudication and as part of the performance on Friday evening: “Sarasponda” and “Galop” They sang great!!

International Student Program
God is doing a special work in our midst with our international students!
This year one of our international students, Jun Cheon (from South Korea) joined our school’s missions team. Jun became a Christian during the 2013-14 school year, and we were excited to see him desire to serve the Lord this year through this ministry.
While on the missions trip to the Navajo Nation, Jun stood up in a church service to share his testimony. He shared how he had been a “punk teenager” in South Korea and how he was living only to please himself. He then shared about how his host family had been influential in leading him to Christ.
To fully understand how awesome this event was, I need to tell you that Jun was translating in his mind from Korean to English and the pastor there was translating from English to Navajo. In addition, there was an older Navajo gentleman in the service who had served in the US military during the Korean War. At the conclusion of the service Jun was introduced to this gentleman and immediately thanked him for fighting South Korea’s freedom. You see, the freedom that was won for South Korea eventually allowed for Jun to come to the US and specifically RCS. At RCS and with his host family, Jun was able to hear the truth of the Gospel where he could find complete freedom in Christ! This was an awesome moment that we will not soon forget!
We celebrate all that God is doing in drawing our students, like Jun, to himself! This is a unique ministry that isn’t limited to the hours of the school day. All of our international students live with host families. Our school’s housing program has grown each of the last three years, and we are anticipating even more growth into next year. We are always looking for and recruiting families that are willing to open up their homes and their lives to this incredible ministry. If you are interested in joining the adventure of hosting international students, contact me at BenWarner@rcs.edu and I will help walk you through the process of becoming a host family. We already have a need for new families for next school year, specifically families that could help house boys.
Please continue to pray for the hearts and minds of our international students to be transformed by the power of the Gospel.

On March 17th my husband and I had an exciting evening – we were invited to attend a ceremony where one of our RCS homeschool students, Daniel James was honored for completing the rank of Eagle Scout. It was great to hear how Daniel has grown and is honoring the Lord with his talents Congratulations, Daniel!
Redwood Christian Schools Home School Program continues to grow! Students at all levels are taking on-campus classes, playing sports, participating in Band and other campus activities. Three Seniors will be graduating this year, Congratulations to Justine Brown, Louis Busch and Joshua Lim. If you know home schooling families, please invite them to checkout what Redwood has to offer!
