Mr. Hearne’s Recommended Resources:
We live in an age where “information” is exponentially expanding. According to Schilling (2013), “Buckminster Fuller created the ‘Knowledge Doubling Curve’; he noticed that until 1900 human knowledge doubled approximately every century. By the end of World War II knowledge was doubling every 25 years. Today things are not as simple, as different types of knowledge have different rates of growth. For example, nanotechnology knowledge is doubling every two years and clinical knowledge every 18 months. But on average, human knowledge is doubling every 13 months. According to IBM, the build out of the “Internet of things” will lead to the doubling of knowledge every 12 hours.” Our children will be inheriting an information age that has never existed and they will be required to keep up. Yet, some things in this future information age remain the same. First, God’s Word is for all people of all time. Second, parents are called to raise their children in the foundation of Scripture (Deuteronomy 6:6-9). One of the reasons for raising children to know God’s Word is so that God’s Word is the foundation for their decision – making later as adults. We must be teaching our children to make wise decisions today, so that when they are living in the new information age, they will know how to make God glorifying decisions on their own. My first recommended resource is a sermon preached by Billy Graham in 1955 and then published on his website in 2015, “Raising Children in A Godless Age.” His recommendations for parents are even more necessary today than they were in 1955. Second, I’m recommending “Four Steps to Making Godly Decisions” because it is a simple framework that focuses upon what’s most important, knowing what God values and then making decisions that align with His values, which must drive us back to the pages of Scripture so that we know what God values. Third, as always, is the “Axis Cultural Translator” so that you can stay current with American culture. Schilling, D. (2013, April 19). “Knowledge Doubling Every 12 Months, Soon to be Every 12 Hours.”
