Mr. Hearne’s Recommended Resources:
Each generation of parents has always had to face something new and figure out what appropriate boundaries should be placed around children. In the early 1900s automobiles were new and parents had to decide when to let a child drive. In the 1960s and 1970s so many TV shows were available and parents had to decide how much time to allow their children to spend watching TV. Today, parents must decide when to give their child a cell phone and how much screen time to allow on that phone. As smartphone technology has continued to develop, entertainment options on the phone have developed as well. The entire world today is trying to figure out how to parent a child with a cell phone and we have not arrived at a consensus. I recently read an interesting article that argues Internet addiction doesn’t really exist but that parents should place age appropriate boundaries around smartphone and Internet usage, “Is Internet Addiction Real?” My second recommended resource is, “How to Keep Kids Safe Online – Setting Boundaries“. I found this article to be really thought provoking and yet full of common sense regarding how parents set boundaries all the time in the real world, but don’t set the same type of boundaries in the digital world. As always, the third resource is the “Axis Cultural Translator.”
