Truth. Love. Growth.

By Dr. Al Hearne II

Ephesians 4:15, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.”

In a world with many voices, Paul encourages us to grow by holding fast to Christ. When we use our spiritual gifts for His glory, we become united in faith, character, and fullness in Christ.

To "speak the truth in love" is key to growth. Truth alone can wound, love alone can compromise. When giving feedback, solely focusing on the truth may be harmful, while only using positive words may overlook issues. Balancing honesty and care repairs bonds.

Paul reminds us that growing in Christ helps us remain steady and rooted, not easily swayed by false teachings or deception. As you grow in faith, continue to nurture the spiritual gifts God has given you, and let them bring unity rather than division.

God made you to grow in Christ. Anchor your life in His love so you can be steady and strong, even when storms arise. With this foundation in place, let's now consider some practical steps for daily growth.

Application

Tomorrow, consider doing a "truth-and-love audit." As you go about your day, write down each interaction and reflect on whether your words expressed both truth and love. At the end of the day, review your notes, consider how you might grow, and choose one person to encourage honestly and kindly from what you've learned.

Growth comes through community, not isolation. How are you using your spiritual gifts to build up those around you? Who might you serve in Christ’s name this week?

Reflection - Ask your children to reflect upon the following questions:

  • What does it mean to “speak the truth in love”?
  • Why is it important to grow up in Christ and not remain spiritually immature?
  • How can our family encourage one another to continue growing in Jesus this week?

Growth in Action

Remember: Growth in Christ means unity, knowledge, and maturity. As you practice:

  • Speak life – Encourage one person daily with words of truth and love.
  • Pursue unity – Look for ways to work together, rather than apart, whether in family, church, or school.
  • Practice discernment – Compare what you hear in the world with God’s Word and stick to the truth.

With young children, use simple phrases, such as ”Jesus loves you,” “tell the truth,” or “be kind.” Ask why questions. For example, to discuss the concept of "be kind," ask, "Why is it important to be kind?" Children may answer, "Because it makes others happy." Affirm this and note it shows Jesus' love. With older children, discuss real-life challenges of balancing honesty and love, and how Christ exemplifies both.

Continuing this focus on growth, as a family, make an effort to encourage development through conversations at the dinner table. These conversations help reinforce the daily practice of speaking the truth in love and noticing how Christ is helping us grow stronger together.

If you ever feel stuck or discouraged in your spiritual growth, remember you are not alone. Ask God for guidance and consider a small step forward.

If growth ever feels slow or hidden, remember, every believer experiences such seasons. In those moments:

  • Remember grace – God’s love does not change based on how fast you are growing.
  • Stay rooted – Continue in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship even if it feels dry, knowing growth often happens beneath the surface.
  • Seek renewal – Sometimes a new practice (like journaling prayers, fasting, or serving in a fresh way) can awaken growth.

Above all, trust that Christ is the Head, committed to growing you into His likeness.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us gifts, talents, and abilities to use as You call us to grow up in Christ. Keep us from being tossed about by the lies and distractions of the world. Teach us to speak the truth in love, to use our gifts to build up Your body, and to grow together into maturity in Christ. May our lives glorify You in everything we say and do. As we step into our day, keep us unified and guide our words toward one hurting person, sharing Your truth and love as one body. In Jesus' name, Amen.
