Starting Strong - A Parent's Guide

The kids aren’t the only ones learning how to make friends this year - you have a special opportunity too—to build a strong, joyful community of parents. We’re not meant to parent alone. Whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or somewhere in between, there’s a place for you in this school family. So don’t be afraid to take that first step and INVITE others in—it might lead to a lifelong friend... or at least someone who understands the agony of opening a Go-Gurt in a moving car.

I – Introduce Yourself

Drop-off and pick-up are great moments to smile, introduce yourself, and ask a simple question like, “How’s your little one adjusting?” A little courage and a warm hello can go a long way in building friendships.

N – Nurture Fun Parent Meetups

Host a “Parents Only” morning coffee meetup or go for a walk after drop-off. Connecting with other parents helps you feel known and supported as you raise kids through similar stages.

V – Volunteer Together

Join classroom activities, field trips, Jog-a-Thon, and other school events. Serving alongside others creates natural opportunities to connect and build shared memories.

I – Initiate Playdates

Plan simple, low-pressure gatherings like “Popsicles at the Park” after school on Fridays, weekend bike rides at Parsons Park, or a trip to the library. It’s casual, fun, and a great way to chat while the kids play.

T – Take Time to Listen

Everyone’s navigating something. Be a listening ear when another parent needs to talk. Ask how they’re doing—and really mean it. Building a network of trusted adults going through the same parenting stage offers reassurance, encouragement, and a few well-timed laughs.

E – Encourage

Speak life to one another. Share a Bible verse, a kind note, or a simple, “You’re doing a great job.” And don’t forget to pray for the families around you—your encouragement may be exactly what someone needs that day.

Parent Reflection

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
