His Image. His Intent. His Invitation to Grow.
By Dr. Al Hearne II
Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
It is tempting to believe our worth lies in who we are, what we do, or how others see us. Yet before we spoke, achieved, worked, or posted online, our worth was declared by God, not by fleeting trends, friends, or coworkers, but by the one true God who made us in His image.
Genesis 1:27 reveals one of the most profound truths in all of Scripture: you were created by God and created in the image of God. Not in appearance or ability but in essence. The phrase “in His image” means that each person, created as either male or female, carries a divine reflection of God's nature in their body, soul, and spirit. Every person ever born was designed with God’s fingerprints all over them, with a spiritual hunger to know God, the ability to form relational connections with others, and the ability to fulfill the calling God has placed upon their lives.
God didn’t create people as machines or as duplicates. God formed image-bearers as unique individuals. You were created to reflect His goodness, to walk in His presence, and to grow in His likeness.
You were made with dignity. You were made with intention. You were made to grow.
Application
This week, take a moment to remind yourself and your children that being made in the image of God gives both value and responsibility. You are not defined by comparison, culture, or career. You are not defined by the number of social media followers, academic ability, or athletic skill. You are solely defined by the One who formed you.
Because you were made in His image, you are called to grow in His likeness. An easy way to tell if you are growing is to ask yourself, “Am I growing in the Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)?” Growth may not be fast or flashy, but it is holy.
Reflection - Ask your children to reflect upon the following questions:
- What does it mean to be made in God's image?
- How does knowing this change the way you treat others?
- In what areas do you think God is helping you grow right now?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for making us in Your image. Instead of copies, You designed each of us to reflect Your nature. Help us walk in the Fruit of the Spirit as people made by You and for You. Show us where we need to grow and give us grace to continue. We are not accidents; thank You for creating us for this moment. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
