Covered. Courageous. Complete.

Ephesians 6:13+14b, “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm... and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
The next piece of Roman armor Paul turns to is the breastplate. In Roman times, the breastplate was a vital piece of equipment that covered the body from the neck to the waist. By the time of Emperor Claudius, it had become a highly developed piece of armor. It was a series of interlocking metal strips fastened at the waist and laced up the front. It protected both the chest and the back, guarding the lungs, heart, and other vital organs from direct attack. No soldier would ever enter battle without it. To do so would be to invite disaster.
Paul’s readers would have understood the picture clearly. The breastplate was not optional; it was protection for life itself. In the same way, the believer’s protection is the breastplate of righteousness. Just as armor guards the heart from physical harm, righteousness guards the spiritual heart, the place of our emotions, motives, and convictions. Without righteousness, the believer is exposed and vulnerable to the enemy’s accusations and deceit. Consider this: how can a parent, already stressed on a Monday morning school run, practice righteousness when patience is running thin? In those moments when tempers could easily flare, righteousness offers a shield that helps them respond with grace and calm, rather than giving in to immediate frustrations.
In Isaiah 59:17, God Himself “put on righteousness as a breastplate.” That means this piece of armor is not something we manufacture; it originates in God’s own character. Through our salvation in Jesus Christ, God’s righteousness has been placed on us. We stand forgiven, not because of what we’ve done, but because of who He is and what Jesus did. When we think that we are unworthy, when guilt or shame tries to take root, we stand firm in the truth of Romans 3:22, “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”
But Paul’s use of the word “righteousness” here is about both being declared right before God and living right before God. The breastplate represents both our new position in Christ and the daily practice of integrity, justice, and Christlike living. In other words, we protect our hearts by walking in obedience. Righteousness becomes a protective breastplate because living in God’s will leaves less room for the enemy’s attacks.
Our righteousness is both received and reinforced, received through Christ and reinforced through faithful living. When righteousness covers our hearts, temptation loses its power, criticism loses its sting, and shame loses its voice. Righteousness is the daily decision to live in the right, to do what honors God, and to let His character mold and shape us.
Every parent knows how deeply the heart needs protection. The world tempts our children with self-definition, distraction, and doubt. The enemy attacks through comparison, pride, or guilt. While we can't control every external pressure, we can guard the heart, both ours and theirs, with righteousness. We can encourage our kids to reflect Christ in their interactions, even in online spaces. By living out their faith, they become light in a world of darkness. While truth fastens the belt, righteousness secures the heart, giving their lives direction and purpose.
Application
This week, make it a family goal to “guard your heart” (Proverbs 4:23). Talk about what that means in daily life. When your child faces peer pressure, unkindness, or irritation, remind them that the breastplate of righteousness means they don’t have to respond in kind. They can respond with what is right, not just what feels natural.
Parents, model this same protection. I remember a morning when I became frustrated, letting a minor mishap get the best of me, and how it affected my family's mood. With self-reflection, I recognized the need to ground my responses with patience and grace. When you are tempted to react out of anger or fear, pause and ask, “Is my heart guarded right now?” Pray silently before responding. Let your children see that righteousness is about choosing, moment by moment, what honors God, rather than perfection.
Reflection – Ask your children to reflect upon the following questions:
Before jumping into these questions, take a brief moment of silent reflection together. Encourage your children to think deeply about these ideas on their own.
- What does it mean to “guard your heart” in your daily life?
- How does living rightly protect us from regret, guilt, or shame?
- Take a moment to relish being clothed in Christ and celebrate the grace bestowed upon us. What helps you remember that your righteousness comes from Christ?
Growth in Action
- For younger children: Cut a paper heart and color a 'breastplate' to go over it. Write 'Jesus makes me right with God' across the front. While coloring, share the story of young David, who trusted God completely when facing Goliath. Talk about how David's faith in God was like a shield that protected his heart, just like God's righteousness protects our feelings and choices. This makes the craft activity more engaging and helps children connect their art to a powerful story about God’s truth.
- For older children or teens: Ask them to list a few ways the heart can be "unprotected" (anger, dishonesty, jealousy, etc.). Then write the opposite responses that reflect righteousness (forgiveness, truth, humility). Encourage them to think of real scenarios from their week, such as interactions through texts, moments during sports, or challenges with schoolwork. By doing this, they can personalize the "unprotected" versus "righteous" concepts, making them feel more relevant to their lives. Encourage them to pray, "God, protect my heart today with Your righteousness."
- As a family: Read Ephesians 6:13–14 together and Isaiah 59:17. Discuss what it means that God Himself wore righteousness as His armor. Pray as a family, asking God to help you live with hearts guarded by His truth and grace.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for clothing us with the breastplate of righteousness through Jesus Christ. Help us to guard our hearts each day with Your truth and to live with integrity, denying temptation and sin. When the enemy accuses or discourages, remind us that Your righteousness already covers us. Keep our hearts steady, our motives pure, and our lives faithful to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
