Starting Strong - A Parent's Guide

Building Independence

Independence can feel bittersweet for parents—it means your child is growing up, forming their own identity, and needing you a little less. While this can be hard to watch, it’s also a key step in their growth. Independence builds confidence, resilience, and character. From a Biblical perspective, it’s how children begin to make personal choices to follow Jesus—not just because they’re told to, but because it's real in their own hearts.

Age-Appropriate:

At Home:

  • Putting on their socks AND shoes
  • Putting on and zipping their coat
  • Carrying their backpack
  • Helping to pack their lunch or snack
  • Cleaning up toys after play

For School:

  • Carrying their own backpack to and from the car
  • Washing hands and using the bathroom independently
  • Putting things into their cubby in the right spots
  • Feeding themselves appropriately
  • Cleaning up items into the proper places

These little everyday tasks are building blocks of confidence, self-control, and resilience. When your child is allowed to do things on their own—even slowly or messily—they are learning that they can do hard things!

Try This At Home

  • Give extra time for your child to try something before stepping in
  • Resist the urge to do it for them. Instead, guide them to do it with you or on their own.
  • Celebrate small wins (“You zipped your coat all by yourself!”)
  • Let them experience natural consequences (“Uh-oh, we forgot your water bottle—let’s make a plan to remember it tomorrow!”)

Every button they fasten and backpack they carry is a small step toward independence and responsibility. And we’re cheering them on every step of the way!
