RCS Bus Safety Information

EC 39831.5. (a) (1) Upon registration, the parents or guardians of all pupils not previously transported in a school bus or school activity bus and who are pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1 to 6, inclusive, shall be provided with written information on school bus safety. The information shall include, but is not limited to, all of the following:


General rules of conduct at school bus loading zones

The following rules should be enforced at all school bus stops:

1. Students are to stay at least six feet away from the area where the school bus will stop.

2. Parents should arrive at the school bus stop five minutes before the school bus is scheduled to load.

3. Students are to stay off all landscaping and must stand or walk on paved areas only.

4. Students are to obey all other school rules.



Red light crossing instructions

The following procedures will be followed when conducting a Red Light Crossing.

1. Students identify themselves when the driver asks if there are any students who must cross the street.

2. Carefully follow the driver's instruction.

3. Under no circumstances is running permitted.



School bus danger zone

The following areas or actions near the school bus loading zone are dangerous:

1. The first six feet along the roadway, curb or area where the school bus is stopping.

2. Standing behind and in front of a school bus.

3. Walking into the street in front or in back of a school bus.

4. Crawling under a school bus to retrieve a dropped item.



Walking to and from school bus stops

The following rules must be followed when walking to and from school bus stops:

1. Students should stay off private property.

2. Students should conduct themselves in the same manner as required on school grounds.

3. Students should never run to the school bus stop.

4. Students are only allowed to cross a street that is equipped with a signal light, unless a Red Light Crossing is performed by the bus driver. Serious injury or death, not precluding serious consequences at school, can result if students cross the street after exiting or trying to reach a school bus unescorted. Crosswalks not controlled by a traffic signal are not to be crossed by students as they approach or leave a school bus. Such crossing will be a Red Light Crossing.
