Joe Hendren, Former Girls Basketball Coach at Redwood Christian High School Honored as Honor Coach of the Year by the North Coast Section of the CIF
During halftime of the Redwood Christian High School Homecoming Boys’ Basketball Game, former Redwood Christian High School Girls’ Basketball Coach was honored as the 2013 Girls’ Basketball Honor Coach. Coach Hendren was selected for his “Professional Conduct, Service to Interscholastic Athletics, Outstanding Coaching Accomplishments, and Contributions to School and Community.” Gil Lemmon, Commissioner of Athletics for the North Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation, presented the award along with comments from current Director of Athletics Jim Cleveland, who reviewed Coach Hendren’s accomplishments, and Superintendent Bruce Johnson, who hired Coach Hendren thirty years ago when Mr. Johnson was the Director of Athletics.
Mr. Hendren’s family and former players were present for the presentation. Coach Hendren, always supported by his wife Mrs. Hendren, coached the Varsity Girls Basketball Team for eighteen seasons, taking his team to the Section Play-offs fourteen times, with a league record of 134-62 (.683) and led the Lady Eagles to the State Play-offs in both 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 seasons, winning the State Championship in 1999-2000. Coach Hendren was honored as the Alameda News Group (ANG) Coach of the Year for the 1999-2000 season. Eight of his players went on to play at the college level.
There are more than one-hundred-sixty schools in the North Coast Section CIF, and only one Honor Coach is selected each year for Girls’ Basketball. The entire Redwood Christian Schools Community is very, very proud of Coach Hendren!
