Redwood Christian Schools has officially broken ground for the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium to be used in service of Christian educational Athletics!

Superintendent Al Hearne opened the ceremony on April 19th, 2017 with a word a prayer, and stated “…our prayer is that it will be used for God’s glory and enjoyed by both RCS students and the community as a place of athletic fellowship.” He followed by reading Ephesians 3:20-21:

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

The new gymnasium is named after the first RCS Athletic Director, Mr. Bruce Johnson, who established the school’s athletic program. Upon his retirement as the second Superintendent of RCS, the Board unanimously voted to name this gymnasium after him.

Superintendent Hearne continued, “This gymnasium will fill a necessary component of our athletic program, greatly strengthening volleyball and basketball, as well as opening the door for additional athletic teams such as badminton.  In addition, upon its completion, it will allow for the current P.E. locker rooms to become new science classrooms.”

  • Fun games of volleyball, basketball or badminton can be played in P.E. on rainy days
  • Scheduling home games and practices at off-campus gyms will be a thing of the past
  • RCS can host playoff games for NCS tournaments
  • We can now have recreational lunch time tournaments
  • The entire MSHS student body can now meet together for assemblies

Athletic Director, Jim Cleveland shared, “When we get this thing up and running we are going to be amazed at how we did without a gym on campus for all these years. . . This gym is going to provide all future students [with a] homecoming on campus in a gym of our own.  We will walk in and see red, white, and blue on the walls and bleachers, and the words ‘Home of the Eagles.’”

“This building will instantly become the most-used building on campus!” said Mr. Cleveland.

To end the ceremony, the entire middle school and high school student body, as well as all guests, lined what will be the walls of the new gymnasium.

Mr. Cleveland finished with “…I am very excited that this building will bring improved educational, athletic, fitness, and recreational opportunities, and the promotion of school spirit…” He thanked “the dedicated servant leadership of the RCS Board, and our past and present superintendents, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Hearne, for taking a step of faith to further expand the ministry of RCS!”

Completion of the Bruce D. Johnson Gymnasium is set for the summer of 2018.
