On January 25 2014, a great Christian leader, veteran, and gentleman went to Heaven when Mr. Richard Henry “Dick” Short passed away after a recent fall. Mr. Short was loved by so many at Redwood Christian Schools where he served on the RCS Board of Directors for more than thirty-five years (almost twenty-five as Chairman of the Board). He could always be seen at athletic events, school celebrations, choral and instrumental programs, and all Back-to-School BBQs, especially the ones involving our students. In 2012, Mr. and Mrs. Short were presented the Redwood Christian Schools Lifetime Recognition Award in recognition of their service.
Mr. Short is survived by his precious Bride of sixty-four years, Doris, their five children, Deedra Pedersen, Boise, Idaho; Daniel Short, Castro Valley; Donna Dobbs, Hayward; LtCol Dale Short, Drayden, Maryland; and Beth Teyler, Billings, Montana.
Lieutenant Commander Short was a Naval Flight Officer serving as the Electronic Warfare Officer for the Admiral’s staff when he retired on May 31, 1971.He served the country he loved for twenty years, including two back-to-back deployments to Vietnam. He worshiped his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at Fairhaven Bible Chapel in San Leandro and later at Valley Bible Church in Pleasanton. He was also an avid member of the Castro Valley Rotary Club, serving as its President in 2007-08.
There will be a viewing at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward, CA from 4:30-9:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, followed by burial at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. His life will be celebrated Friday, January 31, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Redwood Chapel Community Church, 19300 Redwood Road, Castro Valley CA 94546. Our loss is truly Heaven’s gain. In lieu of flowers, donations may me made to the Richard Henry “Dick” Short Memorial Fund, c/o Redwood Christian Schools, 4200 James Avenue, Castro Valley CA 94546. All contributions will help boys and girls receive a Christ-centered education from Redwood Christian Schools.
Our thoughts go out to Mr. Short’s family and friends. God Bless.
