The RCHS Class of 1987

JULY 2009

Dan Siemens (class of '87) and his wife Janet recently welcomed beautiful twin girls into the world on May 12, 2009, naming them Carolyn Joy and Elizabeth Grace.  They arrived unexpectedly a full 8 weeks before their due date, and weighed about 4 pounds each at birth.  Although they were basically healthy and had no serious problems, they did have some bradycardia episodes (heart rate issues very common in premature infants), so they spent their first month and a half in the intensive care nursery.  They're both doing just fine now, and Dan and Janet feel doubly blessed
.

Are they identical twins?  We don't know for sure.  They do look very similar, but we've begun to notice some subtle differences.  Do twins run in the family? They do now.

Dan

September 2001

A portion of Jon and Jen Ball's last newsletter:

" . . . Personally, as area directors for InterVarsity in Los Angeles, we have been struggling to find ways to live out the commands of Scripture to do justice. One application God's given us is that we can strive toward this particular aspect of restoring Shalom in our ministry. Specifically, we want to work hard to foster ministries where students of different ethnicities bless an benefit one another and see God's image stamped upon each other.

"This requires our staff team to become increasingly diverse. It also means the Lord will have to teach us how to live out Shalom among ourselves (as staff) before we can hope to lead others into it. Let us share some of our struggles so you can pray and partner with us!

"Of particular concern to us are black, Latin-American, Southeast Asian, and American Indian (native American) staff. We currently have no American Indian folks on staff, and I long for us to begin dealing more with the history of sin, injustice, and anti-Shalom of the United States towards these peoples.

"One big struggle with hiring black and Latin-American is the practicalities of living resources. Though categorizations aren't true for everyone, many people we could or would like to hire from these backgrounds have difficult situations. If someone is the fist family member with a college education, they may lay a crucial role in supporting their family. To come on staff is impossible for some unless they receive a salary comparable to other jobs for which they are qualified.

"Additionally, in reality many minority communities in the U.S. don't have the same opportunities and access to resources white Americans do. So the family, friends, and churches of these potential staff cannot give enough financially to fund their ministry with InterVarsity. . . . Please pray with us for wisdom and creativity, for the ability to sacrifice and invest our time and energy in the right places to be able to bring these folks on staff. And pray that this aspect of Shalom--mutual benefit and blessing across ethnic lines--would begin to be restored among college students through our meager attempts. . . . .

Grace and Shalom to you in Jesus Christ our Lord,

Jon and Jen
