Day 8, Friday, April 11
Hello Parents and RCS Community,
The God we serve is amazing. We had three
student missionaries get sick and guess what?
There was a medical missions team from Colorado
staying in the same housing compound with a
Doctor who was willing to talk with the students
and determined that it was merely a 24 hour
virus. Then, during the work project one
student was accidentally hurt and guess what?
The local medical clinic was only 50 yards down
the street, cleaned and disinfected the cut and
then gave him 3 stitches. What amazed me the
most was what I heard our student missionaries
saying in the van, "Isn't it amazing how God has
provided for our safety and health? He knew
that we would get sick and provided a doctor!!!"
After dinner tonight we went to a local internet
cafe to send some emails home. I asked each
student to email me a couple of sentences about
the week and I've cut and pasted them below
for you:
Matt Roberts says, "This week has been life
transforming. The Kids were so amazing and where
energetic with everything we brought to their
attention. The most amazing part of this trip
for me was the home visit I went on. To see how
they lived and how they loved the Lord even
though they didn't all the stuff we do during
our everyday lives. Christ was so alive and the
people were such an inspiration to live my life
serving rather than being served."
Austin Foxworthy says, "This whole trip has been
so amazing. The work project turned out so well
though we probably will never see the finishing
product of what we started. The whole VBS was so
good. Everyone did their part well and it ran so
smoothly. This missions trip has totally put my
life in the direction I want to go. I must look
to God for all things in my life and not try to
run it by myself."
Matthew Black says, "One thing that has really
stuck out on this trip is not the kids or the
VBS but the adults. Those that work at the
school said from the very beginning that for
this week the school is ours. They made us
welcome and accommodated our every need. I was
asked to take offering at the Wednesday morning
service and I was amazed to see that every
single adult gave money, however much they
could, and about half the kids gave also. For
them, giving was a natural part of the service
so even they could only give half a Q (about 7
cents or so) they still gave."
Kristin House says, "I've always loved working
with kids but there was something different
about these kids we got to work with in
Guatemala. They were so loving and cherished
every moment we had together. Even the high
school kids were thankful for everything we did
with them. They treated us like we were their
family and that truly meant a lot to me. Even
when we went to the home visit, they opened
their house to us and fed us and answered all
our questions without thinking twice. This
whole trip has been amazing and has shown me
what it truly means to show love like Christ did
to other people. And what the affects of doing
so are. I believe that I'll never be the same
when I come home."
Monique Dyquiangco says, "This week has been
amazing. I have learned a lot from the people of
Guatemala. The love of Christ and the joy they
have for him is present in their everyday lives.
Just seeing how content they are with what they
little they have and praising God always, was a
real testimony to me."
Alyssa Borgerson says, "I really enjoyed
spending this week with the children at the
school. They are so precious. I was truly able
to feel like a servant this week. I hope that I
will be able to stay in contact with people here
for a long time to come."
Spencer Huey says, "God is amazing! This trip
has helped me to realize that God always has
plan for us and will ALWAYS provide for us.
There were many times throughout the trip when
things looked bad; God came in and helped our
team out."
Caleb Borgerson says, "This week was amazing
because we had the opportunity to help those who
are less fortunate, yet are happy with what they
have. It was also a great opportunity to grow
closer to God and learn new things from
experience."
Brittany Poon says, "This week has been one of
the most life changing weeks of my life. I would
have to say that working with the kids at their
school was my favorite part. I have become so
close to them throughout the week. Each child
was so loving and they put a smile on my face
everyday and although i was so sad to leave
them, I know that every opportunity like this is
from God and should be used for God. Guatemala
is soooo cool=)"
Nick Chavez says, "This trip has truly reminded
me of the perspective change I had last year.
The faith of the Guatemalan people are so
inspiring, and the smile on the faces of the
children could melt a heart of stone...just ask
Mr. Hearne. Just kidding. to end with....God IS
good. God IS powerful. And the love of God is
life changing."
Erin Suth says, "This week has been life
changing. Being violently ill taught me quite a
lot about relying on God in situations that I
have absolutely no control over. I will never
forget the testimony of Robert and Cathy Lad, it
is the experiences of those wiser in the faith
that encourage us to become stronger and better
ambassadors for Christ."
Chelsea Price says, "Even though it was the last
day of VBS and the last time I would see these
children, I am confident that we as a team have
left an imprint on them and they have left an
even bigger imprint on us. This trip was
anything but comfortable but God's love is just
that much greater and that much more evident
because of it."
Josiah Gutierrez says, "The work project and VBS
went well. Especially on the last day, so much
was done. You can tell that we have been a
blessing to the school, who was so happy. The
faculty there was so amazing to talk to,
especially in Spanish. God has been helpful
throughout the whole thing. Pump it up to the
G's"
Kimberly Bicker says, "Overwhelming' just might
be one of the perfect words to describe this
time in Guatemala! God has shown me so much
through the kids and every experience i have
encountered! God is so good!"
Tomorrow we will spend the day sightseeing and
perhaps purchasing presents. We still do not
have internet access at the housing compound, so
this will be the last email that I send out.
Please pray that we have traveling mercies on
Sunday, arriving home safe and sound.

Day 7, April 10 (part 2)
Hello parents and RCS community!
Mr. Hearne reports that the group has encountered more of the
same - great ministry! This was another great day of VBS,
working on the concrete floor, and street ministry. The group
is looking forward to wrapping things up and coming home but
this has been a wonderful experience.

Day 7, April 10 (special update
about flights)
Hello parents!
I wanted to let you all know that Mr. Hearne and I have been
in contact regarding the team's flight information and the
recent cancellation of American Airlines flights. There has
been one change to their itinerary since Mr. Hearne first
published it. The first flight (from Guatemala to DFW) is
still the same. The second flight number has been changed
from DFW to SFO.
I contacted ACSI and was advised by their travel agent that
American is grounding the MD80 planes; our group is
traveling on a 757 and a 737. They will keep an eye on
things and let me know if anything changes and I will advise
you accordingly. Thus far, none of our flights are
cancelled.
The ACSI team is keeping a close eye on things and will take
great care of our kids.
I'll have another email update for you soon!
Take care,

Day 6, Wednesday, April 9 Hello parents
and RCS community!
We had another good day in Guatemala. We took part in a church
service this morning where our students gave testimonies, sang
worship songs, and then Caleb Borgerson, Kimberly Bicker, and
Austin Foxworthy tag-teamed a 3-point sermon. They correctly
communicated the word of God and did an excellent job.
Our work project is going along well. Today we made 150 iron
rectangles to put onto rebar tomorrow to reinforce the second
floor concrete slab we've been working on. We chiseled away
some more at the cement walls and almost have them ready to go.
VBS is going on strong. We had 30 kids again today for street
evangelism and then did another home visitation. The sad thing
is only two days of ministry left! Before you know it well be
home. We miss all of you.

Day 5, Tuesday, April 8
Hello parents and RCS community!
Yesterday we went through a Guatemalan hail storm. It never
rains from Nov until May 1 (the rainy season is May 1 to Oct
31) and yesterday early it not only rained, it hailed. The
hail was 3/4" in diameter at times. It was quite an
experience. This took place while we were still at the
school as we were wrapping up the work projects so we got to
stand under the eaves of the school and just watch as hail
came down and then lightning and thunder. It was a really
cool experience. The downside of this is that it knocked
internet out of the nation of Guatemala. It has been lost
at the school, our housing compound, even at the home of
Brian Ladd, our ACSI representative. I will be unable to
send emails for....I don't know how long. As soon as
possible, I will send them again but until then I will call
Mrs. Hearne and she will send them out each night.
VBS is going great. It is amazing how talented your
children are. The work project is speeding along. Tomorrow
we will be forming rebar to put into the floor that we will
pour on Thursday. The boys spent today chipping out part of
the stone wall to make it even with a brick wall for 2nd
story floor that we'll be laying. Matt R., Matt B., Josiah
and Caleb are BEASTS! Today we moved two cubic yards of
sand and one cubic yard of rocks with which to make cement
tomorrow.
One really neat thing has been an opportunity for street
evangelism. Each day the school lets out early and opens
its doors to street children. They've asked us to take over
this ministry for the week. The group has really risen to
the challenge, putting together some more Day-Camp-like
songs and crafts. Yesterday 20 children came and today 30
children came! Praise God for this opportunity to reach
Guatemala in ways we hadn't even imagined!
We covet your prayers as we continue in ministry and work.
Thank you for joining with us!
God Bless!

Day 4, Monday, April 7
Querida
Familia,
Hoy era
el primera dia de nuestro escuela de Biblia. Los ninos nos dieron
una gran bienvenidos con una cancion.
Today was the first day of our VBS. The
children welcomed us with a song that they practiced just to welcome
us. Each child came forward and presented each team member with a
flower. We worked hard today. We sang three songs for the children
in Spanish. Alyssa and Kristen performed a puppet show for all the
children which was a big hit. The kids loved the crafts, candy, face
painting, Bible story and play time. Today was such a blessing. We
can't wait to see the children again tomorrow. The boys worked hard
on the construction project. They destroyed an entire roof and began
building a new wall for a new classroom. In the afternoon children
came in from the streets and we ministered to them as best we could
by singing camp songs and telling the story of Christ's birth, death
and resurrection.
Chelsea says, "The joyful children brought tears
to my eyes. There is nothing in this world like serving a beautiful
innocent child for the Lord Jesus Christ. I love these kids and I
love everything here. Its truly humbling."
Matt B. says, "I was glad I had the
opportunity to help build an extra classroom for the school, the
space here is scarce already, something we take for granted in the
United States."
Austin says, "These children know how to play
soccer, and Iīm out of shape."
Kimberly says, "The childrenīs
willingness to share and let us be a part of their lives is truly a
blessing, Iīm so thankful for all the experiences Iīve had today."
Brittany says, "We could all tell that Godīs
presence was evident in the first day of VBS. It was so sweet how
they welcomed us with open arms and the kids were even more adorable
than I expected."
In Christ,
The RCS Missions Team

Day 3, Sunday, April 6 Hello Parents and RCS Community,
We are safe and sound in Guatemala. Tonight, our hostess was
gracious enough to allow us to use her work computer to send you
this email update. Unfortunately I will not be able to send any
pictures tonight.
Today we were up at 7, had breakfast at 8, and were at church by
9.15. We went to the largest church in Guatemala, Frater Ciudad San
Cristobal, it seats 12,000 people. The Senior Pastor, Jorge Lopez,
challenged us with a message from Eph. 5 concerning the importance
of the family.
Our afternoon was spent at the zoo and doing a little bit of
shopping. Here's just a hint for you, you may want to start
watching your mailbox in about 6 weeks for a surprise.
We begin our VBS ministry tomorrow morning. Please continue to pray
that God will use our students for His glory.
In Christ,
The RCS Missions Team

Day Two: Saturday, April 5.
Good evening! Today was a great day! The team was up at 7
for breakfast at 8 and then departed by 9 for Panachel, a famous
lake and tourist vacation spot. After a 3-hour van ride they
enjoyed a sack lunch on the beach then sightseeing and shopping
in the open-air market there. They returned for dinner at 6:30
and then spent the evening preparing for VBS, putting together
crafts and rehearsing songs and skits. Tomorrow will be another
full day with church in the morning and then a trip to the zoo!
We praise God for a wonderful trip thus far and continue to seek
His blessing and protection over the team. Thank you for
joining with us in prayer.

Day One: Friday, April 4, our student missionaries and their
parents arrived at the JHSH campus, loaded the bus, and then were
driven by teacher Ben Warner,to the San Francisco International
Airport to begin their missionary adventure (Click
here to see pictures of their
departure).
So they were on their way to Guatemala to spread the Word of God and
be the Ambassadors of Christ for which they have been training.
Our prayer for these fourteen students and three supervisors is for
God's protection and direction as they seek to do His will.
A call from Mr. Hearne advised that they had made it to Guatemala
safe and
sound and excited to begin this awesome journey.
Via Con Dios.

On Tuesday, April 1, our student missionaries and their parents met
with Mr. Hearne and the other adult trip leaders, Mr. Dale
Huemoeller and MIss Richelle Latona, JHSH Principal John Bakker and
Superintendent Bruce Johnson for the most recent trip information, a
challenge from Mr. Hearne to the student missionaries and then a
season of prayer. |

Our Missions Team has been working since last Spring on their
ten-day missions trip to Guatemala. In addition to raising
almost $30,000 for their travel,
lodging and project expenses, they also have been preparing daily in
a Missions Class taught by the Missions Leader, Mr. Al Hearne, who
will become our JHSH Principal on July 1. The daily missions
classes have prepared the students for all
expected events, including teaching Vacation Bible School, doing
work projects, how to share the Word of God more effectively and
brushing up (and in some cases learning) more Spanish!
