Scholarship Named for Redwood Christian Schools’ Founding Pastor by Bruce D. Johnson, Superintendent, Redwood Christian SchoolsOn March 17, 2008, the Board of Redwood Christian Schools established the Pastor Sherman Williams Memorial Scholarship in honor of Pastor Sherman Addison Williams II, founding pastor of Redwood Christian Schools, who went to Heaven on March 6, 2008, three days before his 90th birthday. The founding of Redwood Christian Schools was the fulfillment of Pastor Williams’ dream for an independent interdenominational Christian school system to provide families from local communities with a truly Christ-centered education where Absolute Truth would be taught. He shared his vision with three men from Redwood Chapel (Bill Beckwith, Adolph Odegaard and Don Madsen), and the school became a reality under Founding Superintendent Gus Enderlin. RCS opened in 1970, with fewer than 80 students, faculty and staff on a single campus at Redwood Chapel. From those humble beginnings, RCS grew to a school with three main campuses and more than 1200 students, faculty and staff. Since our first graduating class in 1977, more than 1400 students have graduated from Redwood Christian Schools having been taught the Absolute Truth of Jesus Christ. To date, thousands of families have been influenced, and thousands of first-time decisions for Jesus have been made in the first 38 years of the RCS ministry. Pastor and Mrs. Williams opened several of our Annual Dinners with their "Call to Supper" song, and Pastor was the commencement speaker for many RCS graduation ceremonies and the teacher of faculty Bible classes. Mr. Richard Short, Board Chairman of Redwood Christian Schools from 1984 to 2008, tells a story that illustrates Pastor’s love for the children of RCS. When Mr. Short was new to the school, he was at a soccer game and saw a distinguished man watching the kids play. Mr. Short walked over, introduced himself and asked the man which one of the players was his. The man, Pastor Williams, simply smiled and said, "They are all mine." We are so thankful for the impact Pastor Williams has had in all aspects of the ministry of Redwood Christian Schools. He enjoyed the fulfilment of his vision by ensuring that the foundation laid 38 years ago was firmly rooted and faithful to the Truth of God’s Word. The friends of Pastor Williams wished to establish a scholarship to perpetually fund to honor his memory. This fund will annually award a scholarship to a deserving graduate from RCS whose goal is to attend a Christian college in preparation for ministry in full-time Christian education or the pastorate. The Pastor Sherman Williams Memorial Scholarship is intended to be a perpetual fund and will be supplemented annually by gifts to the fund. Contributions to this fund, made payable to Redwood Christian Schools, are tax-deductible and will be receipted. If you would like to contribute to this fund, simply write Pastor Sherman Williams Memorial Scholarship on the memo line of your check. We will miss Pastor Williams and his commitment to
providing a Christ-centered education for every child. His vision is
alive and well at Redwood Christian Schools. |
